Festive Modak | Dates/Khajoor and Nuts Modak | Sugar Free Modak | How to make Modak at Home is an integral sweet offered as ‘Prasad’ or Naivedyam to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chahurthi. These modak are easy to make and do not contain any sugar except the natural sweetness from dates. You can be flexible with the quantity of nuts and sesame seeds used. Dates contain fibre and antioxidants in addition to several vitamins and minerals
Ingredients:
- Dates deseeded and chopped
- Evaporated milk or full cream milk (optional )
- ghee
- essence (optional)
- coarsely ground almonds
- coarsely ground pistachios
- roasted sesame seeds
How to make Modak at home
Firstly in a pan, dry roast the chopped nuts on low heat for a minute taking care not to burn the nuts. Keep them aside.
Take dates in another heavy bottom skillet and saute the dates on low flame. Add ghee and stir at regular intervals.
In between add the evaporated milk to the dates. Within 3 to 4 minutes the dates become soft mushy mass.
Add the nuts and toasted sesame seeds to the dates and saute for a minute. Now put off the flame.
Add the rose essence at this stage
Mix nicely and let the dates mixture cool slightly.
Refrigerate for an hour.
After an hour take out the modaks
Offer as prasad or naivedyam .
Distribute to family and friends.

Ingredients
- 150 grams dates deseeded and chopped
- 1 to 2 tbsp evaporated milk optional
- 1 tablespoon ghee
- 1/2 tsp rose essence optional
- 2 tbsp almonds coarsely ground, roasted
- 2 tbsp pistachios coarsely ground, roasted
- 1 tsp sesame seeds roasted
Instructions
- In a pan, dry roast the chopped nuts on low heat for a minute taking care not to burn the nuts. Keep them aside.
- Take dates in another heavy bottom skillet and saute the dates on low flame. Add ghee and stir at regular intervals.
- In between add the evaporated milk to the dates. Within 3 to 4 minutes the dates become soft mushy mass.
- Add the nuts and toasted sesame seeds to the dates and saute for a minute. Now put off the flame.
- Add the rose essence at this stage.
- Mix nicely and let the dates mixture cool slightly.
- Once the dates mixture is cool enough to handle, grease your palms and make modaks with modak mould from this mixture. This mixture yields around 10 modaks.
- Refrigerate for an hour.
- After an hour take out the modaks
- Offer as prasad or naivedyam .
- Distribute to family and friends.
- You can store the remaining modaks in a refrigerator.
Notes
- Omit the milk if the dates are soft.
- Roasting the nuts enhances the taste

Very healthy and delicious modaks for Ganpati Bappa. I make rolls with a similar mixture.
True indeed! these are healthy. I too make rolls sometimes. In fact the dates mixture can be molded into any shape. Glad you liked it.
Wow super easy modaks and that too healthy and full of nuts. Love anything with dates. Will plan to make khajoor modaks but shape them into balls as I don’t have the mold here. Like that no sugar is added.
