Instant Coconut Modak | Nariyal Modak Recipe | Homemade Instant Coconut Modak- Ganesh Chaturthi festival with step by step instructions is a quick Indian sweet for Ganesh Chaturthi festival. It is an offering ‘prasad’ to the God of Wisdom-Ganesha.

Modak is a Marathi word. In Gujarati language it is known as Modhaka or Kadubu in Kannada, Modhakam or Kozhakkattai in Tamil and Kudumu in Telugu.

What is Modak

Modak means “small part of bliss” and symbolizes spiritual knowledge. Traditionally, modak is  made from rice flour shell with a filling of coconut and jaggery, popularly known as ‘Ukadiche Modak’. This modak is steamed and drizzled with saffron milk.

Why Instant Coconut Modak

Due to our hectic schedules and time limits, there is a desire for quick versions of instant modak for Ganesh Chaturthi. Many such variations of modak trend during these festivities.

One such modak is the Instant Coconut modak. It makes use of desiccated coconut, mawa (milk solids), milk powder and sweetened milk. No filling is needed in this at all. Easy isn’t it?

  • Desiccated Coconut – Jusy right for this instant recipe. You could use fresh coconut but you will have to cook it for a slightly longer time.
  • Condensed Milk – Can use home made or store bought.
  • Milk Powder – Use good quality
  • Mawa/Milk Solids- Can use store bought mawa or home made mawa. Use unsweetened onel
  • Sugar – Use powdered sugar.
  • Flavoring -Crushed cardamom
  • Ghee – for greasing.

How to make Homemade Instant Coconut Modak with step by step instructions

Preparing the modak mixture

Firstly, in a pan take desiccated and roast it on slow flame for a minute.

Secondly, add milk powder to the desiccated coconut.

Now mix well till the milk powder is incorporated uniformly into the coconut mixture. Work on low to medium flame.

Thirdly, add mawa to the coconut mixture. Mix till the mawa gets incorporated well.

Now add condensed milk gradually. Mix properly. The condensed milk binds the coconut mixture.

Then put off flame and add cardamom powder to the mixture.

Let this coconut mixture become cool.

Lastly add sugar powder and gently mix so that sugar is incorporated well.

Cover and set aside for five minutes.

Shaping the modak

Grease modak mould.

Take small portions of mixture and place it in the mould.

Secure the mould with the lock in order to shape the modak.

Thereafter open the mould and gently take out the modak from it.

Make more modaks from the entire mixture.

Tips for Perfect Instant Coconut Modak

You can use homemade or store bought mawa.

Work on low to medium flame. Keep a constant watch. The coconut must not change color.

Use good quality desiccated coconut.

Variations

You may add saffron infused milk or crushed nuts to the coconut mixture.

1-2 tablespoon of rose syrup is another flavoring for modak.

A teaspoon of rose water also works well.

In the above cases a slight adjustment may be needed in the quantity of condensed milk.

FAQ

How to make Homemade Mawa

In a thick bottom pan, heat a tablespoon butter. To this add half cup milk and one cup milk powder. Keep stirring continuously on low flame so that no lumps are formed. After sometime the mixture will become thick and leave the sides of pan. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Mawa is ready!
