Childhood memories are still firmly embedded about this Savory Cake Recipe. As children, we fondly referred to it as Keema Cake or Keema Pudding, and it was a much-loved dish at gatherings with family or friends apart from Chicken Curry in Nigerian Style or Sindhi Teevan. During one of my childhood visits to India, I was quite surprised to hear it being called Keema mithai —but it makes perfect sense, given the way it can be baked or steamed in a shallow dish and cut into bite size portions.

What is Keema Macaroni Savory Cake
Keema Macaroni Savory Cake is a savory baked appetizer made with minced meat, pasta ,vegetables and aromatics. Egg is used here as a binding. This snack can alternatively be steamed instead of baking without any compromise on its taste. It is a great option for gathering and potlucks.
Despite its name, it is a savory dish, not a sweet cake. The “cake” denotes its shape and presentation.

Ingredients for Keema Macaroni Savory Cake
For Measurements refer to the RECIPE CARD further below.


- Minced meat – can use lamb or goat or chicken minced meat.
- Onions – finely chopped
- Tomato – pureed or chopped
- Green chilies– chopped
- Ginger and garlic chopped
- Pasta – I used small sized elbow macaroni
- Eggs – for binding
- Cilantro leaves
- Spice powders – coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder and salt
- Cooking oil
- Water
- Veggies – for mince meat mixture – bell peppers chopped, carrots chopped,
- Walnuts – chopped for topping
How to make Mince and Pasta Cake

How to Cook Minced Meat
1. Firstly, heat oil in a pan and sauté chopped onions till light pink.
2. Then, add mutton mince, turmeric powder, ½ tsp salt, ginger and a tablespoon or two of water (to prevent burning). PRO TIP – Here mutton mince is used, but you could alternatively use chicken mince.
3. Initially cover the pan and cook on medium flame for around 7-10 minutes.
4. Now remove the cover and let the liquids evaporate.
5. Add chopped garlic (or garlic paste), green chilies. coriander powder and red chili powder.
6. Continue to sauté till you see a slight browning at the bottom of pan. Add a tablespoon or two of water at this stage and stir. Repeat this process 2-3 times till the color of the mince has turned intense– a technique known as the bhuna method, where food is cooked down to develop an intense hue and flavor..
7. Then add tomato puree. Sauté further till its juices dry up. PRO TiP – You could add chopped tomatoes instead of pureed tomatoes.
8. Finally add about 100 ml of water, sprinkle garam masala and chopped fresh coriander. Cover and cook for 30 minutes till liquids dry completely. PRO TIP – Adjust water quantity such that no water remains when the mince is cooked.
9. Once the minced meat is cooked and liquid has dried, switch off flame. Uncover it slightly to cool the mincemeat. PRO TIP – We need a dry mixture for baking. Completely covering the hot keema mixture may result in condensation.

Make and Bake Mincemeat pasta Savory Cake.
10. In another wide bottom pan boil elbow macaroni to al dente. PRO TIP – Small elbow macaroni works best. Optionally you could use any other small size variety of pasta.
11. Break eggs in another mixing bowl. Add a pinch of salt, coriander powder, chilli powder. Give it a mix. PRO TIP – If eggs are small, use three of them.

12. Combine the eggs mixture, boiled macaroni, chopped carrots, bell peppers and chopped cilantro. Adjust for seasoning.
13. Turn out the mixture into a greased pan. Garnish with some chopped walnuts and cilantro.
14. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°Celsius for 30 minutes.
15.Aft er 30 minutes, do check test if toothpick comes out clear from the savory cake, it is done. If the top looks mushy and wet, continue to bake for another 5 minutes or so. Once baked, remove the savory cake from oven and let it sit for five minutes. Cut into square pieces and serve warm..

What to serve with
Serve warm with coriander mint chutney, or hot chili garlic sauce, onion lachcha salad and pineapple mojito. Along side you could serve pasta salad or sprouts chat.
FAQ
Why is the Mince and Pasta Baked Delight crumbly and falls apart
Fewer eggs may result in a crumbly texture. Also if the water/juices from minced meat mixture have not evaporated properly, then cake may not hold its shape.
How to make a vegetarian version of this cake
Substitute minced meat with soybean granules. Instead of using egg mixture, add in mozzarella cheese. This is the closest alternative that I can think of, though I personally have not tried .
Instead of baking how else can I make this cake
Instead of baking, you can steam it in a shallow pan till cooked and firm.

Ingredients
Ingredients (1 cup = 250ml)
Minced meat
- 250 gm minced meat cleaned and washed goat/lamb or chicken mince, cleaned and washed
- 2 medium onions finely chopped
- 1 tomato finely chopped
- 2 green chilies chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger chopped
- 1 tbsp garlic chopped
- Few sprigs fresh coriander chopped
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- ½ tsp red chili powder
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- ¼ tsp garam masala powder
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
- water as needed
Savory Cake
- Above cooked minced meat
- 1/3 cup small elbow macaroni cooked al dente
- 2 large eggs or 3 small eggs
- 1/4 cup bell pepper chopped
- ¼ cup carrots chopped
- ¼ tsp salt adjust as needed
- ½ tsp coriander powder
- ¼ tsp red chili powder
- ¼ tsp garam masala powder
- 2 walnuts chopped
- Few sprigs fresh coriander chopped
