Hare Pyaaz ka Chilla | Spring Onions Pancake is an ideal filling breakfast. Winter is a season, when the sight of fresh greens with their vibrant colors brings glitter in your eyes. One can easily differentiate the wilting yellowish greens in summer from the bright vibrant greens in the winter. This is another post in the series of previous post of Bajra Gur Ki Kutti that showed shades and moods of winter foods.
How to define Chilla to the Western world? Well, crepe or pancake maybe the closest look-alike of the Indian Chilla, so also could be their hybrid. This Chilla is not as thick as Apple Slice Pancake. There are umpteen combinations of Chilla both sweet and savory.

What is Spring Onion Pancake
This Chilla resembles a ‘roti’ made from a flour batter along with herbs, spices and vegetables. Chilla could be made from one kind of flour or a mix of different flours and as for the herbs, spices and veggies there is no limit. This pancake uses predominantly spring onions along with other ingredients.
Ingredients for Hare Pyaaz ka Chilla
For Measurements refer to the RECIPE CARD further below
- Whole Wheat Flour
- Fine Semolina
- Chickpea Flour
- Green Onions (Chopped)- can use chopped white bulbs as well along with the green stalks
- Green Garlic – not mandatory
- Coriander Leaves Chopped
- Green Chilies / Ginger Paste – Use according to your liking. Preferably make a paste of both
- Curd- try to use a sour curd
- Turmeric powder
- Coriander Powder
- Salt To Taste
- Oil
- Water To Make Batter

How to make Spring Onion Chilla at home
with images and step by step instructions
Make Spring Onions Chilla Batter
Take a mixing bowl and put the whole wheat flour in it.
To this add chickpea flour and semolina.
Secondly add the ginger chili paste
Now add the spices- salt, turmeric powder and coriander powder.
Then add the chopped green onions, green garlic and coriander leaves
Lastly, add a tsp of oil.
Combine everything
Then add curd and mix
Finally, add water and prepare a batter
Cover and leave aside for 10 minutes.
Cook the Chilla
To make the pancakes or chillas, heat a skillet over medium flame. Clean the surface of the skillet.
Drop 1-2 ladles of chilla batter and let it cook on medium flame
Drizzle a few drops on oil on its sides
Then flip and let it cook on the side.
Once cooked on both sides, remove on to a plate
How to serve Hare Pyaaz ka Chilla
Serve hot with Green Coriander Mint Chutney, plain curd , Veggie & Boondi Raita or immunity boosting Instant Raw Turmeric Pickle
Tips for Perfect Spring Onion Pancake
Cook the Chilla on low to medium flame.
The Chilla should not be thick.

Any other variations of Spring Onion Pancake
Keeping Spring Onion factor constant one may use only chickpea flour ‘besan’ or a combination of rice flour and besan. Another interesting combination is wholewheat flour and semolina. To make a gluten free Chilla use a mix of gluten free flours such as besant, ragi and rajgira. For vegan version omit curd.
How long can a Spring Onion Pancake / Chilla be stored
For best taste consume immediately. Else wrap in foil for consumption within a few hours. If beyond that, then wrap Chilla in foil and store in fridge . Heat and consume within 24 hours.

Neha, I usually make chilla with besan and rice flour. After coming across your recipe, added some wheat flour too and a generous amount of spring onions. They came out so delicious and could make them a bit more crispier for hubby as he likes them that way.
