What is Mexican style Guacamole

Having originated from Mexico , Guacamole is a supreme dip that is tasty and simple to make. It tastes best when avocado is perfectly ripe and the ingredients are chopped fresh. The basic ingredients used with avocado are lime, tomato, onions, chili and salt. Guacamole has originated from Mexico.

The history of Guacamole dates back to the Aztec Empire in Central America during the 15th century. The Aztecs loved the ‘ahuaca-mulli’ or avocado-mixture. They mashed avocado and then added tomatoes, chili and salt. The Spaniards also loved this treat and included lime, onion cilantro but could not pronounce the name correctly. With time, they named this dip as Guacamole. Read more about Guacamole here here.

  • Avocado – Select a ripe avocado. A ripe avocado will have a slight give when it is lightly pressed. If not ripe, the avocado will be hard when pressed lightly. If there is lot of give or mushy feeling, then avocado is too ripe.
  • Onion – Can use red, yellow or white variety. gives a crunchy bite.
  • Tomato – Use tomatoes that are less juicy. De-seed and remove pulp.
  • Garlic – Just for mild subtle flavor.
  • Green Chili / Jalapeño – Use mild or hot variety. Give a pleasant ‘kick’
  • Lime juice – Use freshly squeezed lime juice. Add zest.

Tips for perfect Guacamole dip

  • Use fresh ingredients and spice. A slight off-taste will dampen guacamole flavors.
  • A perfect guacamole should be between creamy and chunky texture.
  • Do not over mix in the beginning, by the time guacamole is prepared, it will turn to a paste.
  • Just the right kind of ripeness of avocado is what guacamole is all about. Read below – How to pick a good avocado.
  • You could substitute parsley for cilantro.

FAQ

Stem of avocado must be intact. If the stem has already been removed, there is a likelihood of brown spots inside. A ripe avocado will have a slightly give when you slightly squeeze. An overripe avocado will feel mushy . If the avocado is not ripe, it will be hard under light pressure.

Guacamole oxidizes and changes its color quickly. Hence it is important to prevent or slow down the process of browning. As soon as avocado is cut , sprinkle lime juice over it and give it a mix.

Place any leftover guacamole in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. Place a cling wrap directly over the guacamole in the container. There should be no air bubbles between the dip and wrap. Finally, secure the container with lid and refrigerate. Additionally, you could keep an avocado pit over the guacamole.

5.store guacamole

Another way of storing guacamole is to place leftover guacamole in an airtight container. Flatten its surface. Then add about a fourth inch of cold water over the guacamole. Place lid on the container and store in fridge. When you want to use guacamole, just drain the water and use.

I prefer to consume leftover guacamole within three days of its preparation.
